Parts swap between brands, you wait days for them instead of weeks, and almost nothing is discontinued for good. That changes the math on every repair. A brand with its own parts can leave you stuck waiting on a board. A Whirlpool problem usually gets found and fixed in one visit.

1. Vacuum the condenser coils twice a year

   Dust plus 110-degree air is what kills compressors in Arizona, and it's worse for anything in a garage. On a Whirlpool this is the most valuable upkeep you can do, and it only costs you some time.

2. Clear the defrost drain if water pools under the crispers

   It's nearly always a plug of ice or gunk in the drain, not a broken part. It's one of the cheapest repairs on the fridge, and it'll keep coming back until the drain is cleared out right.

3. A blown thermal fuse means check the vent, too

   The fuse is a safety part. It doesn't fail on its own. It blows because airflow was blocked. Put in a new one without cleaning out the vent and the next one blows too, sometimes within a week.

4. Grinding in the dishwasher is usually the chopper

   Whirlpool dishwashers use a hard food disposer instead of a fine filter. The chopper gets dull or jams on something it can't cut, and that causes both the noise and the poor cleaning. People blame the pump all the time.

5. You can get almost any Whirlpool part

   The same parts system covers Maytag, KitchenAid, Amana, Jenn-Air, Roper and Estate, so parts are cheap and show up in days. If someone tells you a Whirlpool part is discontinued, get a second opinion.

Whirlpool builds to last about ten to fifteen years, and the parts are cheap and easy to get. So repairing makes sense for longer than the price tag would suggest. A machine at year eight with a bad pump, element or valve is nearly always worth fixing. That changes when the sealed refrigerant system or the transmission fails on an older unit, and we'll tell you when you've reached that point instead of selling you a repair that doesn't make sense.
