No heat on an electric oven is the bake element most of the time, and you can usually see the damage: a blister or a break in the coil. On gas it's the igniter. It weakens before it dies, so the sign is the oven taking longer and longer to light. Running hot or cold is normally the temperature sensor, and that's an easy fix.

Whirlpool wall ovens and range ovens break in a short, predictable list of ways. That's good news if you're deciding whether to fix one. The bake or broil element is the most common, and you can usually see it: a break or a bright burnt spot in the coil. The temperature sensor is trickier because you can't see anything wrong. When it drifts, the oven thinks it's reached the set temperature when it hasn't, so the display looks right and the food cooks wrong. A separate oven thermometer finds it in one bake. Door hinges and the door gasket are behind most uneven-baking complaints that aren't electrical at all. A door that doesn't close square lets heat leak out the whole time. Whirlpool parts are cheap and easy to get, so all of these are worth fixing on an oven of almost any age.
