Ice makers take the worst of Arizona water. At 16 to 28 grains (very hard water), scale builds up in the fill tube and the water valve, and you get small, hollow or cloudy cubes long before it quits altogether. If a unit's never had a softener on it, we look for scale first.

Whirlpool ice makers are modular, and that's the most useful thing to know when one stops. The whole assembly is made to be swapped out as a unit, not rebuilt. So instead of hunting for which piece inside failed, we check whether the ice maker is the problem at all. A lot of no-ice calls turn out to be the water inlet valve (the valve that lets water into the ice maker) or a frozen fill tube, and both cost less than a new module. A frozen fill tube is especially common in Arizona. A valve that closes slowly lets a dribble of water freeze in the tube, and that blocks the next fill completely. Low water pressure at the valve gives you hollow or half-formed cubes instead of no ice at all, and that difference is a useful clue. Whirlpool modules are cheap and stocked, so when the ice maker really is the problem, it's a same-visit repair.
