A washer that won't drain is a drain pump nine times out of ten, and what's in the pump is usually a sock, an underwire, or a handful of change. Banging on spin is normally worn suspension rods or shocks. Our hard water is rough on the water valves where the hoses hook on, too. They scale up and slow the fill.

Whirlpool washers come in two families that break in very different ways, so the first step is figuring out which one you have. The older belt-driven and direct-drive top-loaders are simple machines and worth fixing longer than most people expect. The coupler, the lid switch and the drain pump cover most calls on those. The newer vertical modular platform acts more like a front-loader on the electronic side. On those, a washer that fills and drains but never agitates usually needs a shift actuator, not a transmission. Front-loaders have their own pattern. The drain pump filter catches coins and throws a drain error that looks just like a dead pump. And the door boot, the rubber seal around the door, tears at its bottom edge and leaks only during spin. If a washer that used to run fine keeps giving you unbalanced-load errors, get it checked instead of working around it. It often means the suspension or a bearing, not the load.
