Why the answer changes on a high-end machine
A $600 dishwasher past halfway through its life is rarely worth a $400 repair. A built-in Sub-Zero, Wolf or Thermador is a different machine built to a different lifespan, and a repair that would be uneconomic on a budget unit is often the obvious call. Replacing a built-in also means matching a cabinet opening, which is a cost the sticker price never shows.
