1. Tell us exactly how it's cooling

   A fridge running all the time with BOTH sides warm points at the linear compressor and the sealed refrigerant system. One side warm and the other cold points at a fan or damper, for a fraction of the cost. Those sound alike on the phone, and they're very different repairs.

2. Check the model and serial before paying for a compressor

   LG has extended coverage on some linear compressors. Find out whether yours is still covered before anyone quotes you. We check it for you, so you don't have to.

3. A washer that won't spin is usually a sensor

   Direct drive means there's no belt and no transmission, so on an LG a no-spin is much more often the rotor position sensor than the big mechanical failure it would point to on other brands.

4. Check the bottom of the door boot for tears

   Fold back the rubber seal around the door of your front-loader and look at its lowest point. Gunk collects there and tears it, and you get a leak that only shows up during spin.

5. Damp clothes are often the thermistor, not the element

   On LG dryers the thermistor is a small sensor that tells the board how hot the drum is. When it drifts, the dryer heats but never quite finishes the job. From the outside, it doesn't look like a sensor problem at all.

LG builds to last longer than most mass-market brands, so repairing stays worth it longer than it does on a budget unit. Not nearly as long as a built-in, though. What decides it almost every time is whether the problem is inside the sealed refrigerant system. If it isn't, most LG repairs are worth doing.
