Maytag Appliance Repair

Whirlpool bought Maytag in 2006. For repair, that's the most useful thing to know about the brand. Anything built since then sits on a Whirlpool platform and shares its parts, so parts are easy to get, and a tech who knows Whirlpool laundry already knows most of these machines. Real pre-2006 Maytag is another story. Those were built on Maytag's own designs, some of their parts are hard to find now, and the age alone means repair-or-replace is a real question, not a formality. We figure out which era your machine is from before we order anything. Guessing it's the newer platform and being wrong wastes a trip.

1. Find out if it's from before or after 2006

   Whirlpool bought Maytag in 2006. Machines built since then use Whirlpool parts, and those are easy to get. Older ones were built on Maytag's own designs and some of their parts are scarce now, which changes the whole repair conversation.

2. A washer that won't agitate usually needs an actuator

   On the Bravos and later top-loaders, filling and draining but never agitating is nearly always the shift actuator or the rotor position sensor. On older designs that same symptom meant the transmission. Not here.

3. Don't ignore banging on the spin cycle

   Maytag builds them heavy, so these washers keep running off-balance much longer than lighter ones. By the time the noise is obvious, the suspension is usually badly worn.

4. A dead washer is often just the lid lock

   These won't run unless they can tell the lid is locked. When the lock fails, the washer looks completely dead: no lights, nothing.

5. Clean out the dryer vent, not just the lint screen

   The screen catches the lint you can see. The duct behind the dryer is what chokes the airflow, blows thermal fuses and turns one load into three cycles. It's also the real fire risk in that room.

A Maytag built after 2006 costs about the same as a Whirlpool to fix. Parts are cheap and easy to get, so repairs make sense well into the machine’s second decade. An older, real Maytag is a different call. There the question is whether we can still find the part, not what it costs, and if a machine needs a part nobody makes anymore, no price fixes that.
