Most no-cool calls aren't a dead compressor. Nine times out of ten it's the start relay (the little switch that kicks the compressor on), the condenser fan motor, or coils packed solid with dust. Arizona is hard on refrigerators. At 110 to 115 degrees the compressor barely gets a rest, and a unit in the garage is working in heat it was never built for.

What is different about a Whirlpool refrigerator
Most Whirlpool fridges have a single evaporator (one set of cooling coils for both sides). That makes them easier to figure out than the dual-system built-ins, but it also means airflow matters a lot. If the fridge side is warm and the freezer's still cold, it's almost always the evaporator fan or a blocked damper, not the compressor. Both sides get their cold air from one place, and that air has to make it over. The defrost system is the other problem we see over and over. When the defrost heater or the timer fails, frost builds on the evaporator until air can't get through. You'll notice the fridge slowly warming while the compressor runs nonstop. In Arizona the condenser coils matter more than anywhere else. Dust plus 110-degree air is what kills these compressors, and vacuuming the coils twice a year is the cheapest way to make one last longer.

My Whirlpool fridge is warm but the freezer is fine. What's going on?
Most Whirlpool models have a single evaporator, and on those, that points at the evaporator fan or a blocked damper, not the compressor. Both sides get their cold air from one place, so the problem is usually getting the air over to the fridge side.
Why is my Whirlpool refrigerator running constantly?

Usually a clogged defrost drain. It's a plug of ice or gunk, not a broken part, and it's one of the cheapest repairs on the fridge.
