Freezer Not Freezing? Work Through This Before Calling

Freezer not freezing but the light is on? A step-by-step check covering the four things that are safe to test yourself, and the point where it stops.

Key takeaways

  • About eighty percent of the time it's one of four things, and three of them are free to check.
  • Dirty condenser coils are the most common cause we find in Arizona. If you only do one thing on this list, clean the coils.
  • If it runs, the coils are clean and the seal is good but it's still warm, the problem is in the sealed refrigerant system. That's not a homeowner job.

Freezer not freezing? About eighty percent of the time it’s one of four things, and three of them are free to check. Go down the list in order and stop at the first one that matches what you’re seeing.

Arizona is different from most of the country here. Heat and dust are harder on condenser coils than anything else we deal with, and a garage freezer gets the worst of it. If you only do one thing on this list, clean the coils.

Tip A freezer that’s packed full holds its temperature a lot better than a half-empty one, because the frozen food itself holds the cold. If you’re running a garage freezer through an Arizona summer and it’s half empty, fill the space with jugs of water. They cost nothing and they help. It won’t fix a broken part, but it takes some load off a compressor that’s already working harder than it was built to.

And if you’re buying a freezer for the garage, get one rated for the heat out there. It costs a little more than a standard unit, and that’s a lot less than replacing a standard unit twice.

Work through it in order

Stop as soon as one of these fixes it. You don't get a prize for finishing the list.

  1. 1 Make sure the freezer is running at all
Put your hand on the side or the back. If you feel no vibration and no warmth at the coils, it isn't running. That's a different problem from a freezer that hums along and still won't freeze.
Stop here if: Nothing's running and the outlet is dead when you test it. That's a circuit problem, not the freezer.
  2. 2 Look at the coils
Pull it out and look at the condenser coils (the grille of tubes on the back or underneath). In Arizona this is the most common cause we find. Dust plus 110-degree air means the compressor can't get rid of its heat, and a freezer that can't get rid of heat can't make cold.
Stop here if: The coils are packed with dust. Vacuum them, give it 24 hours, and see where the temperature ends up.
  3. 3 Check the door seal with a dollar bill
Close the door on a dollar bill and pull it out. If it slides out with no drag, the seal is letting warm air in all the time, and the compressor is running flat out to keep up. A garage freezer with a worn seal in July never catches up.
Stop here if: The seal is split or flattened. It's worth replacing, and it doesn't cost much.
  4. 4 Look for frost where it shouldn't be
Frost on the evaporator (the cooling coils inside the freezer) is normal. Frost on the walls, the ceiling or around the door means a leaky seal or a defrost cycle that's stopped running. If it's the defrost, that's a defrost heater or timer, and that's as far as a home fix goes.
Stop here if: There's heavy frost anywhere other than the evaporator coil.
  5. 5 Stop here
If it runs, the coils are clean, the seal is good and the frost looks normal, but the box is still warm, the problem is in the sealed refrigerant system, which has to be opened with special tools and training. That means the refrigerant, the compressor or a blocked capillary tube (a thin refrigerant line). That's not a homeowner job, and it's not something to guess at. Guessing gets expensive.

Common questions

  • How cold should a freezer be?

Zero degrees Fahrenheit. Don't trust the dial. Put a thermometer in a glass of water overnight and read that. Dials drift, and a freezer running five degrees warm spoils food slowly enough that you'll blame the food.

  • Why do garage freezers fail so often here?

Garage temperature. Most units are rated for air up to about 110 degrees, and a closed Arizona garage in July gets hotter than that. The compressor stops shutting off, and one that never gets a break wears out several times faster.

  • Is a freezer worth repairing?

A chest or upright under about eight years old with a failed part, usually yes. If the sealed refrigerant system fails on an older unit, usually not. The repair gets close to the price of a new one. We'll tell you which one you've got before we charge you for the visit.
