A washer that won't drain is a drain pump nine times out of ten, and what's in the pump is usually a sock, an underwire, or a handful of change. Banging on spin is normally worn suspension rods or shocks. Our hard water is rough on the water valves where the hoses hook on, too. They scale up and slow the fill.

LG built its washers around a direct-drive motor that connects straight to the drum. There's no belt and no transmission in between. That cuts out a whole group of problems, and it changes what a no-spin call usually turns out to be. On a belt-driven washer, a drum that won't spin often means the transmission. On an LG it's much more likely the rotor position sensor or the stator (the coil ring the motor spins around), and both are smaller repairs, not a reason to buy a new washer. The drain pump and the door boot cover most of the rest on front-loaders. The boot is the rubber seal around the door opening. Gunk collects at its bottom edge and it tears there, so you get a leak that only shows up during spin, and it's easy to blame on the pump. If a washer that used to run fine keeps throwing unbalanced-load errors, take it seriously and don't just work around it. It often means worn shock absorbers or a bearing starting to go.
