Gritty dishes are usually the filter or the spray arm, not the pump. Our water runs 16 to 28 grains here, which is very hard, so the little holes in the spray arms scale shut and the arm stops reaching the top rack. Standing water in the bottom is a drain problem, often the air gap (the little cap next to the faucet) or a kinked hose under the sink.

LG uses the same direct-drive idea in its dishwashers as in its washers. The wash motor runs so quietly that a failing one often gets mistaken for a drain problem. Checking the drain first costs nothing and rules out the cheaper problem before anyone starts talking about a motor, since a clogged filter or a kinked drain hose leaves the same standing water as a dead pump. If dishes aren't getting clean and there's no error code, it's usually the spray arms or the filter, not anything electrical. You can look at both yourself before you book a call. When the dishwasher won't start at all, it's the door latch switch more often than the control board.
