A washer that won't drain is a drain pump nine times out of ten, and what's in the pump is usually a sock, an underwire, or a handful of change. Banging on spin is normally worn suspension rods or shocks. Our hard water is rough on the water valves where the hoses hook on, too. They scale up and slow the fill.

Maytag sells its washers on being tough, and the mechanical parts really do hold up. So when they break, it's usually somewhere else. On the Bravos and later top-loaders, we mostly see electronic and sensor problems, not broken frames or gearboxes. The usual suspects are the shift actuator (the small motor that switches the washer between agitate and spin), the rotor position sensor, and the lid lock, since the washer won't run without it. If your Maytag fills and drains but never agitates, it's almost always one of those. On older designs the same symptom meant a dead transmission. Front-loaders act like Whirlpools, and most calls come down to the drain pump filter or the rubber door seal. One more thing about that heavy build. These washers keep running off-balance longer than lighter ones, so by the time anyone hears it, the suspension is often badly worn.
