Gritty dishes are usually the filter or the spray arm, not the pump. Our water runs 16 to 28 grains here, which is very hard, so the little holes in the spray arms scale shut and the arm stops reaching the top rack. Standing water in the bottom is a drain problem, often the air gap (the little cap next to the faucet) or a kinked hose under the sink.

A Maytag dishwasher is a Whirlpool under the badge. That means it has the hard food disposer, a little chopper blade, instead of a fine filter, and that drives most of the problems we see. The chopper jams or goes dull on something it can't cut. You get dirty dishes and a grinding noise that people usually blame on the pump. The drain pump does fail, and it's cheap, but rule out a clog first. A plugged hose or a check valve stuck open leaves the same standing water. The door latch is why most "dead" Maytag dishwashers aren't dead. The machine won't start unless it can tell the door is shut.
