What we see most on refrigerators
Most no-cool calls aren't a dead compressor. Nine times out of ten it's the start relay (the little switch that kicks the compressor on), the condenser fan motor, or coils packed solid with dust. Arizona is hard on refrigerators. At 110 to 115 degrees the compressor barely gets a rest, and a unit in the garage is working in heat it was never built for.

What is different about a Sub-Zero refrigerator
Sub-Zero built-ins use dual refrigeration. That means two sealed refrigerant systems (both have to be opened with special tools and training) and two compressors, one for the fresh-food side and one for the freezer. It's the most useful thing to know when one side quits and the other keeps working. On a regular fridge, a warm fresh-food side with a cold freezer usually means an airflow problem or a stuck damper (the little flap that lets cold air through). A Sub-Zero doesn't share air between the two sides, so we look at that side's own system instead. The condenser (the coils that get rid of heat) sits behind the top grille on most built-ins, and Arizona dust clogs it much faster than the service schedule expects. A clogged condenser raises head pressure (the pressure the compressor pushes against), the compressor runs hot, and the unit slowly stops holding temperature. So cleaning it heads off real trouble, and we're not saying that to sell you something. Door gaskets are the other common call. These magnetic seals get hard with age and heat, and once one stops sealing, the unit runs nonstop long before anyone notices the temperature has crept up.

Why is one side of my Sub-Zero warm and the other cold?
Sub-Zero uses dual refrigeration, so each side has its own sealed refrigerant system. If one side fails and the other works fine, the problem is in that side's system. On a regular fridge, the same symptom would point to airflow between the two sides.
Is a 15-year-old Sub-Zero worth repairing?
Usually, yes. They're built to last twenty-plus years and parts are still available, so a repair that wouldn't make sense on a cheap fridge is often an easy call here. If it isn't worth it, we'll tell you straight.
How often does a Sub-Zero condenser need cleaning in Arizona?
More often than the manual says. Dust packs the condenser, head pressure goes up, and the unit runs hot and slowly stops holding temperature. In this heat, twice a year is realistic.
My Sub-Zero runs all the time. What causes that?
Most often a condenser packed with dust, or a door gasket that's gone hard and doesn't seal anymore. Both cost a lot less than the sealed refrigerant system work people expect.
