A washer that won't drain is a drain pump nine times out of ten, and what's in the pump is usually a sock, an underwire, or a handful of change. Banging on spin is normally worn suspension rods or shocks. Our hard water is rough on the water valves where the hoses hook on, too. They scale up and slow the fill.

Samsung front-loaders and top-loaders break in different ways, so it helps to know which one you've got. On a front-loader, check the drain pump filter first. It sits behind a small panel at the bottom of the washer and catches coins and lint. When it clogs, you get a drain error that looks exactly like a dead pump. The door lock is the other common front-loader problem. The washer fills and then won't go any further, because it can't tell the door is latched. On top-loaders, most of what we see is the shift actuator (it switches the washer between agitate and spin) or the rotor position sensor (it tells the motor where the drum is). If the washer fills and drains but never agitates or spins, it's usually one of those two. An unbalanced-load error on either kind is a symptom, not an answer. It could be worn suspension rods, a bearing going bad, or just how the load was packed. Sorting that out is the real work, and we don't guess at it.
