Most no-cool calls aren't a dead compressor. Nine times out of ten it's the start relay (the little switch that kicks the compressor on), the condenser fan motor, or coils packed solid with dust. Arizona is hard on refrigerators. At 110 to 115 degrees the compressor barely gets a rest, and a unit in the garage is working in heat it was never built for.

The French-door ice maker is the Samsung call we get most. On most of these models the ice room sits up on the fridge side, not in the freezer. It's closed off behind its own seal and has its own small defrost heater. When that seal wears out or the heater quits, damp air gets to the ice. Frost builds up around the auger (the corkscrew that pushes the ice out) and the cubes freeze into one solid block. It looks like the ice maker died, but the problem is frost, not the ice maker itself. If you pry the block out, you can crack the auger housing and turn a cheap repair into replacing the whole ice maker module. Twin Cooling models give us a helpful clue. They have two separate evaporators (the cooling coils), one for each side. So a warm fridge side with a freezer that's still cold means something very different than it would on a fridge with one evaporator. It points at the fridge-side evaporator fan or its defrost circuit, not the compressor. Samsung control boards are tied to the model year and don't swap between years, so we match the board to the tag before we order anything.
