Most no-cool calls aren't a dead compressor. Nine times out of ten it's the start relay (the little switch that kicks the compressor on), the condenser fan motor, or coils packed solid with dust. Arizona is hard on refrigerators. At 110 to 115 degrees the compressor barely gets a rest, and a unit in the garage is working in heat it was never built for.

GE makes a huge range of refrigerators. So the first step is finding out if yours is builder-grade or a Profile or Monogram, because that changes both what we look for and whether the repair is worth doing. Across the whole range, the same three things keep failing: the evaporator fan, the defrost system and the condenser. Most of the everyday models cool both sides from a single evaporator, the cold coil behind the freezer wall. On those, a warm fridge side with a cold freezer points to an airflow problem, not the compressor. Ice makers in the French-door models are a common call all by themselves. The water inlet valve (the valve where water comes into the fridge) fails often enough that we test it before anyone replaces the ice maker. Here in Arizona, keep an eye on the condenser coils (the grille of tubes under or behind the fridge). Dust plus 110-degree air is what finishes off these compressors, more than age does.
