What we see most on dishwashers
Gritty dishes are usually the filter or the spray arm, not the pump. Our water runs 16 to 28 grains here, which is very hard, so the little holes in the spray arms scale shut and the arm stops reaching the top rack. Standing water in the bottom is a drain problem, often the air gap (the little cap next to the faucet) or a kinked hose under the sink.

What is different about a GE dishwasher
GE dishwashers have changed a lot over the years, and which generation you've got changes what we look for. Older ones had plastic tubs and a simpler wash system. Newer ones went to stainless tubs, better filters and quieter pumps. That quiet has a catch. A failing circulation pump (the pump that sprays the water) is much harder to hear than it was on an older dishwasher. So the dishes start coming out dirty before you hear anything, and people blame the soap or how they loaded it. Most other calls are the drain pump or the door latch, and a bad latch is why plenty of "dead" GE dishwashers aren't dead. The filter and spray arms cost nothing to check and cause a lot of the dirty-dish complaints. Clean them before anyone quotes you a pump.

My GE dishwasher isn't cleaning well but doesn't sound any different. Why?
The newer, quieter models hide a failing circulation pump. You see dirty dishes before you hear any noise. Check the filter and spray arms first. If that doesn't fix it, it's time to have someone look at it.
It won't start at all. Is the board dead?
Usually it's the door latch, not the board. The dishwasher won't start unless it can tell the door is shut, so a bad latch looks just like the power is out.
Is an older plastic-tub GE worth repairing?
For a cheap fix like a latch or a drain hose, yes. For a pump or a board on one that's already past ten years, replacing it often makes more sense, and we'll tell you so.
